James W. Drinkard was born Georgia in May 1867, two years after the emancipation of slavery. On August 2, 1891, he married Victoria (Eldie) McClendon who was born in Georgia in October 1872. According to the 1900 and 1910 Census, James and Victoria (Eldie) resided in Blakely Town, Early, Georgia; both could read and write. They lived and worked as farmers on the land that they rented. James also hacked logs at local saw mills, and Victoria (Eldie) was a day laborer on the farm. In 1920, the family is found living at Belleville Ward 2, Essex County, New Jersey. James is a 53 year old laborer, and Victoria (Eldie) is, according to the U.S. Census, a 46 years old stay-at-home mother.
Victoria Eldie's parents, Joe and Jennie McClendon, were born in Georgia as well. According to the 1870 Census, they lived in District 28, Early, Georgia. Her siblings include: Milton; Sarah; Willie; Aaron; Louvinia; Chaney; and Joseph. Joe was a wagoner and Jennie kept house. The value of their land was $250 ($4,237.29 today) and they had a personal value of $750 ($12,711.86 today). Neither could read or write.
